New technology can be a game changer for the aging population, assisting with everything from communication and transportation to personal safety and health.

Personal care devices: Smart watches and wearables — Smart watches have been on the market for more than a decade, but recent advances have suited the technology more toward seniors. Many wearable devices include fall detection with automatic assistance provided if the wearer falls down. Health and fitness monitors, like heart rate and blood oxygen saturation level monitoring, and medication reeminders are also standard on many such devices.

Where to find: The New York Times’ Wirecutter tech reviewers recommend the UnaliWear Kanega Medical Alert Watch, which offers two batteries so users never need to be without the device due to charging needs. The Apple Watch also offers fall detection and users can set up medical alerts for emergency responders. The LifeFone At-Home Cellular system offers a pendant or wristband with which users can call for emergency assistance.

Communication tools: Captioned telephones — For the hard of hearing, captioned telephones offer a new way to talk to loved ones. The devices, which are available as both landline phones and smartphone apps transcribe calls in real time. Captions are displayed on the phones themselves, and can also be cast to a larger screen. These devices are often free for those diagnosed hard of hearing.

Where to find: The Hamilton Mobile CapTel landline phone comes in several models, some with touch screen capacity, optimized for users with low vision and those without internet access. There’s also a Hamilton Mobile CapTell app.

Driver assistance: Self-driving vehicles — According to reporting by Arkansas Business, self-driving vehicles are gaining traction among older adults seeking to stay on the road longer in life. The technology relies on 360-degree cameras and cutting edge navigation systems, and while a licensed and alert driver is required behind the wheel, aging experts say the vehicles can aid autonomy for seniors.

Where to find: Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, GM and Ford all offer self-driving vehicle technology.
